THE CHALLENGE:

In spite of threats such as light pollution disorientation, sand compression, human activity and contaminants, leatherback sea turtle nests are protected, and baby hatchlings are safely released every year in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Unprotected, one out of 1,000 released survives. Since 2015, the San Juan Sea Turtle Conservancy group 7Quillas has protected over 200 leatherback nests and saved over 3,000 thousand baby turtles. Amidst all of these challenges, our sea turtle conservancy and educational projects continue to protect these endangered species and nesting beaches.

HOW ARE DONATIONS USED?

Your donation will symbolically allow you to adopt a baby leatherback hatchling and directly contribute to saving endangered sea turtles. You will be supporting our volunteer programs and our ongoing educational outreach projects designed to create awareness about the importance of the survival of marine turtles, the origin of contaminants and its impact on our waters, community health, reefs and marine ecosystems.

Thanks to your donation, we will be enabled to continue the ongoing efforts to provide guided leatherback nesting night walks, vigils, the organized release of hatchlings, as well as educational activities involving school talks, light contamination identification, webinars and beach cleanups.

Sea turtles are a valuable driving force in controlling the invasive carnivorous jellyfish population that feeds on fish eggs and other small fish called larvae; they also eat shrimp, and crab Left unchecked, they would over-feed and impact the food resource chain for both people and marine life. Our priority is the survival of endangered marine turtle populations, healthy nesting beaches, reef recovery, and control of water contamination.

You help to make all of this possible! Keep updated and get involved by following us on social media.

Thank you in advance for your generous donation.

Unprotected, one out of every 1,000 baby turtles released will survive.

The Leatherback Sea Turtle, the largest of all living turtles, is classified as an endangered species and is by definition at risk of extinction.

Since 2014, we have worked hard and protected over 200 Leatherback nests and saved over 3,000 hatchlings, but we can’t do it alone!

Your support allows us to educate the public and continue taking direct action to curb the largest threats to their habitat and survival.

El Grupo Tortuguero 7 Quillas uses 100% of its proceeds for the following purposes:

1. Locating and protecting new nests each season until the hatchlings are safely released at the optimal time for their survival.
2. Ongoing outreach projects and education for both children and adults on their impact on our community health, reefs and marine ecosystems. Also, on the origins of contaminants and the importance of the survival of marine turtles.
3. Supporting volunteer programs to protect against light pollution disorientation, sand compression and contaminations to keep nesting beaches turtle friendly.
4. Mission critical equipment and supplies to continue giving our beloved Leatherbacks the best chances of making it to adulthood and the continuation of the species.
5. Additional efforts such as reef recovery, nesting season night walks and vigils, beach cleanups and efforts to increase turtle protection from accidental and illegal fishing.

FUN FACT! Did you know that if an adult turtle does not feel safe enough to come onto the beach to build a nest, it will void all of its eggs into the ocean with a 0% survival rate? Making such a difference, our volunteers and doners mean the world to us, and to the turtles!
